Surfing in Whangarei or spending Xmas in Sandy Bay

It was back in June 2013 when I joined SenhoRita Tours as a healthy lifestyle freelance blogger with the aim to write about different perspectives of healthy life including cooking, baking and yoga practice. My first article Surfing & Yoga was published few months ago. Today I want to start telling you how I ended up in New Zealand and about my first surfing experience here during Christmas.

My life in Slovenia was quite boring so I’ve decided to get a working permisson somewhere outside the Europe. I’ve heard there are a lot of opportunities in New Zealand, so I did apply for working holiday visa and started to pack my bags.

To be honest I even had no plan, just wanted to earn some money to make affordable all the things I wanted for living, including travel and surfing. It’s been a while now since I moved to New Zealand, but there were no good conditions to surf since I arrived.  And just one day before Christmas I was surfing again. It was amazing!

I and two roommates of mine decided to spend few days before Christmas out of the city of Auckland where I live and work at the moment. We’ve heard about nice beaches around Auckland area like Piha, Muriwai, Coromandel and Mangawhai.  If you go further north you can also reach beaches near Whangarei and Ahipara in Northland.

Our choice was to go up north to Whangarei, which lies on the East coast. In the local backpackers we were told we should try surfing at Sandy Beach, as it is good for beginners. Next morning I woke up very excited and hardly could finish my breakfast – I was looking forward seeing surfers sitting in the water and waiting for the perfect wave.

As soon as we got to the beach I rented a wetsuit and surfboard from the local surf school Tutukaka Surfing Experience. Lovely guy who worked there helped me to remember the first steps on the board. Yep, I forgot small details, but hey, I wasn’t surfing for a half a year since my first time in Portugal! The feeling I experienced on the board in Portugal was coming back to me..

I closed my eyes for a second when lying on the surfboard in the ocean, took a deep breath, then opened eyes again, turned my head around and saw a wave coming closer. I’ve decided to catch it following the steps I was thought in Portugal. Suddenly for a moment I felt I am in Ericeira in the surfcamp again.. and I caught the wave! That moment was great and I was silent and serene.

My Christmas day finished peacefully, with a hearth full of joy and happiness. Although I spent that day really far away from my home, family and friends, I felt satisfied and glad that I have this splendid opportunity to be on the other side of the world having an opportunity to get nice experience and make a lot of new friendships far away from home.
